The Bit and the Bridle

Jockeys who consistently ride into the winner’s circle are in complete control of their horses during a race. The winning horse is referred to as the “meekest on the track.” Why? Because a winning horse responds quickly to the jockey’s commands and is totally submitted to its rider. Self-willed and factious horses frequently are left at the gate. And even though they may run faster than the others, they make mistakes and rarely finish with the leaders. The understanding of meekness on the horse track is related to an ancient definition of meekness: “yielding the will to the bit and the bridle.”****

If we willingly yield our lives to God – to the “bit and the bridle” of His will – then we are in the best position to win life’s race. Jesus said, “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5). God never asks about our ability or inability – just our availability. Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8 NIV.****
